Like rabbit’s guinea pigs hide symptoms of illness to prevent appearing vulnerable to predators. Because of this it is very important to keep a close eye on your guinea pig for any slight changes in their eating habbits, activity level and physical appearance. If your guinea pig goes a day without eating or defecating call us immediately. Other symptoms to keep an eye out for include:
- Discharge from eyes or nose
- Respiratory distress or sneezing
- Decrease in activity and/or appetite
- Diarrhea
- Unable to urinate or bloody urine
- Overgrown teeth or misaligned teeth
- Drooling
- Hair loss, lesions/scabs, extreme itchiness
- Head tilt, shaking head, scratching at ears
- Pinkeye (Conjunctivitis)
- Lumps or bumps
If your guinea pig is displaying any of the above symptoms give us a call to set up an appointment and we can come up with a treatment plan.
